Dear friends,
Staging a musical’s world premiere is the culmination of years of work on the part of the artists and the theatres who partner with them; it is both exciting and a tremendous responsibility. It’s the first time the public will see a thrilling new work come to life on stage; how well it launches affects the work’s continued success. We want audiences to flock to the first production, and from there to more productions around the country, and even (if we’re dreaming big) to its eventual Broadway run and beyond.
So it is with profound sadness that we announce the postponement of our world-premiere musical Alice Bliss, originally scheduled to take the mainstage July 12–August 6, 2023. In the past, TheatreWorks has been able to augment the additional costs of mounting a new musical with added funds from a variety of sources, including our own reserves. However, since the pandemic, we have experienced various revenue losses, mostly due to subscription attrition—a trend experienced by theatres nationwide. As such, we cannot do justice to Alice Bliss at this time and have made the extremely hard decision to postpone this production to the future. We feel it is prudent, both to ensure that this show receives the first outing it deserves and to ensure that TheatreWorks maintains its own fiscal stability in the coming months and years.
We are extremely grateful for your continued support and look forward to welcoming you to our upcoming production of Steel Magnolias in June and our exciting 20th anniversary New Works Festival in August.
Be well, and we’ll see you at the theatre.
—Tim and Debbie
