ELEMENTARY PROGRAMS
Playing with Poetry places professional Teaching Artists into elementary, middle school and ESL classrooms. The program uses theatre arts to enhance comprehension, develop oral presentation skills, increase vocabulary, and boost cognitive skills in young students – and it’s fun! A residency requires approximately two weeks of classroom time (1 hour per day) and culminates in an "open workshop" showcasing the students' work. Professional Teaching Artists use traditional theatre games and poetry to lead students through improvisation, visualization, and imagination exercises. The program's emphasis on a kinesthetic connection with language brings the words on the page "alive" for students, while performing in front of their peers and families increases self confidence. All of our programs are designed to meet the California State Content Standards for Theatre, as well as English and Social Studies standards when appropriate.
