TheatreWorks 2008-09 Student Matinee Series

Throughout the season, our dedicated student matinee series gives hundreds of Bay Area youth the opportunity to experience the excitement of live theatre.
Tickets are $10 ($8 for partner schools) and include pre-show classroom workshops, study guides to help teachers incorporate the play into their curriculum, and post-show question and answer sessions with the actors. Scripts are available to teachers upon request.
All of our programming is linked to California State Curriculum Standards.

The Story: Harmond Wilks is a successful African American real estate developer with political aspirations. His plan to revitalize the “blighted” Hill District promises to breathe new life into his home community, and will be a boon to his upcoming campaign for mayor. But when Wilks is confronted with an uncomfortable truth—that a home he intended to bulldoze is not legally his to demolish—he must decide where his loyalties lie, and the cost of success. This timely production coincides with election season, making its lessons all the more relevant to today’s students.
Recommended for middle and high school students.

The Story: Broadway big shot Oscar Jaffe is in financial trouble after a string of poorly received productions, and stands to lose everything unless he can convince starlet Lily Garland to sign up for his next project. It’s madcap mayhem aboard the Twentieth Century as Jaffe, his associates, and a colorful cast of supporting characters each try to keep their secrets secret, and battle to outwit the rest.

The Story: From African chants and Delta spirituals to the urban electricity of a Chicago nightclub, It Ain’t Nothin’ But the Blues is a musical review that summons the soul of American music. Told with historical sweep and irresistible energy, the play chronicles the evolution of the genre through the music itself.

The Story: Mama knows that Jesse is easily “distracted.” His teachers say so, the neighbors say so, and the doctors are using that dreaded term—Attention Deficit Disorder. But is the solution dietary, behavioral, or medicinal? Which treatments are most effective, and at what cost? Distracted is the story of one family dealing with this difficult and increasingly prevalent dilemma.
Recommended for mature middle school and high school students.
Play contains mature language. We highly encourage teachers to read the script beforehand.
