“I liked the play as I was reading it because it was very true. What happens to Ana is what happens to many of us. We are immigrants,”
Maria Arroyo, a Menlo Atherton SADAIE Student |
The Living Out Poster Project
During this project we spent a month with four SADAIE classes. During the classroom sessions, the students were able to discuss the issues of growing up Latino in America’s class system, and being immigrants. The students were able to meet the cast and director of Living Out, who spoke Spanish and could address in truthful candor the issues experienced by this group of students.
Another goal of the project was to have the students create posters that expressed their feelings regarding the themes of Living Out. Students used computers for the project, which developed their computer literacy. Each class worked three times per week for two weeks, using Adobe Photoshop, Microsoft Word, and the Internet to create posters that were then displayed in the classroom as well as around the school. Student Julia Rodriguz said in her evaluation of the project, “We had the opportunity to learn new things, go to a play. We were able to use the computers in new ways, play with them.” And another student, Valentina, expressed, “I really liked having the opportunity to express myself through slogans and posters. I liked to have the actors come to our class because they cared about our class and our race.”
These students are growing up in families doing much of the work that Americans will not do. They have strong feelings about this “adopted” country that are rarely expressed because they are trying to work with the system in which they have found themselves. The value of this type of arts education, addressing themes of social justice, is succinctly expressed by an anonymous student. “TheatreWorks coming into our class showed us that not all white people are racist.”
