2001-2002 "I Am"

The investigation of labels and how they play out in our daily lives and communities was the basis for this Bridges Project: "I AM." An original poetry and photography exhibition provided the articulation of the journey taken by the teaching team and students who participated in the student matinees of Spinning into Butter and Oo-Bla-Dee. It was an invitation to the viewer to attune him/herself to the words and images of our students and listen to the sound of their walk through the "lines and barriers" of their lives.

Following is one panel from the exhibit:

Society would label me as Black, but really I am…

If anybody asks you who I am Feel free to tell them…

I am seen only by my peers as that "black guy."
I am nameless.
I am in love with one who will never love me back.
I am a tall tree constantly trying to be cut down.
I am a swift wind sweepin' the country.
I am a river full of ambition.
I am that little bit of hope for my mother and father.
I am my people.
I am a helpin' hand to those who need it most.
I am a hero to a long line of family that never got the chance that I possess.

You see I am something unique
If anybody asks you who I am
Just tell them. I am what you never thought I was Human,
So try not to judge me.
