Kent Nicholson
TheatreWorks directing credits include Ambition Facing West, Vincent in Brixton and an award winning revival of Arthur Miller’s All My Sons. Off-Broadway directing credits include Wet by Liz Duffy Adams for The Summer Play Festival and Five Flights by Adam Bock for Rattlestick Playwrights Theatre. He also directed Five Flights (Dean Goodman Award for Best Direction) for Encore Theatre which was named one of the top ten cultural events of 2002 by the San Francisco Chronicle. Other collaborations with Adam Bock include Thursday for Encore Theater and Swimming in the Shallows (winner of Bay Area Critics Circle Awards for Best Production, Best New Play and Best Ensemble) for Shotgun Players.
Recent directing credits include the West Coast Premieres of The Good German by David Wiltse and Small Tragedy by Craig Lucas, and the World Premiere of We Are Not These Hands by Sheila Callaghan. He co-adpated and directed the long running play Sacrament! with Dave Eggers and Campo Santo Theater Company and the award wining world premiere production of Dog Act by Liz Duffy Adams for the Shotgun Players. From 1995-2000 Kent served as Associate Artistic Director of the Magic Theatre where he directed the World Premiere of Kissing the Witch by Emma Donoghue (Dean Goodman Award for Best Direction) and the American Premiere of Stones in His Pockets by Marie Jones. Other notable credits include Barrio Hollywood by Elaine Romero for Borderlands Theatre in Tucson, AZ (cited as best production of the year by the Tucson Weekly).
His new play development credits include workshops of plays and musicals by Marsha Norman, Jenny Giering, Beth Blatt, Karen Hartman, Joy Gregory, Gunnar Madsen Chay Yew, Jennifer Maisel, Melanie Marnich, Charles Mee, Julie Marie Myatt, Liz Duffy Adams, Adam Bock, Andrew Lippa, and Elaine Romero.
From 1996-1998, Kent served as Producing Director for the Bay Area Playwrights Festival. Kent has served on the faculty at Sonoma State University, UC Davis, SF State University, and Foothill Conservatory. He is the Editor of the anthology Breaking Ground: Adventurous Plays from Adventurous Theaters. He has a BFA in Acting from Ithaca College and an MFA in Directing from UC Davis. He currently serves on the board of The National Alliance for Musical Theater.
