Taught by Mary Sutton, TheatreWorks' Director of Education:

"My philosphy on acting always starts with 'the action,' what you are 'doing.' From this essential question hangs all the being of the character--all the emotions and all of the physicality of a character. Once the action is firmly in place you can play in the moment, grab the wave and ride it, continually discovering new choices. All great performances are flexible and surprising within the moment and reach beyond the pre-determined choices actors often settle upon when they rehearse. The key is to constantly try to accomplish the character's needs every performance, thus give you access to the moment."
