Props Internship

TheatreWorks mounts eight stage productions each season. One full-time props master is employed with the company who designs, pulls, shops for or creates props for all shows. The company maintains a prop collection of approximated at 50,000 or more items ranging from larger set dressing pieces to small hand-held props. Props works closely with other areas of the scene shop and scenic art staff. Recommended for students interested in props design or management, crafts and special effects, history, art history, or scenic art.

Responsibilities

Assist props master in maintaining and organizing stock area, load-in/strike of rehearsal props, and in preparations for mainstage productions. Props interns also occasionally support projects in scenic construction, or conduct historical research. Assist in the maintenance of a clean, productive shop environment. Interns are not expected to do tasks that are not already part of the staff/overhire workload. As the intern’s work quality and speed is evaluated through the early part of the internship, additional responsibilities and independent project assignments may be available. Interns are encouraged to be proactive and vocal about specific areas of interest and where possible, will be given opportunities for exposure in these areas.

Skills Requirements

  • Three or more years theatre experience required
  • Three or more production credits showing backstage or pre-production experience
  • Strong interest in history, art history, and research encouraged
  • Proficient use of hand tools and smaller power tools preferred

Wednesday Workdays/Special Events

One day each week, interns from all departments come together to support general company operations. On Wednesdays, interns assist in the warehouse in costume rentals or props, or in other labor-intensive projects. Cleaning and organizing rehearsal halls or distributing marketing materials to retail stores are examples of other possible Wednesday Workday projects. In addition, interns are expected to work on large company special events such Opening Night Receptions, the annual Season Announcement, or large patron fundraisers.
