Costume Construction Internship

TheatreWorks mounts eight stage productions each season. The costume department maintains three full time permanent staff members, and offers between 10 and 15 overhire positions (average 6 week contract) per season. The number of internships available varies from 1 to 4 per season depending on production needs. Recommended for students interested in costume construction careers in stage, film, or mens/womens fashion.


Responsibilities

Interns fulfilling the criteria below work alongside the professional stitchers, cutter/drapers, and craftspersons on costuming TheatreWorks’ mainstage productions. Interns begin with simple support projects and as they exhibit mastery, both in quality and in speed, are offered greater challenges. In all cases, mentors assist with support and instruction as needed.


Experience/Background Requirements

  • College or continuing education classes in theatre costume and/or fashion
  • Sewing experience of some kind—home economics, costume shop, fabric store class training on how to use a sewing machine, how to use a commercial pattern, how to construct a completely finished garment, how to do basic alterations
  • Classes in fashion/costume history, art history, theatre history is a plus
  • Work experience as a seamstress or costumer is very desirable


Skills Requirements

  • Know how to sew with at least a domestic sewing machine, willing to learn on industrial machine and sergers
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Dependable self-starter
  • Quick learner and ability to work independently
  • Knowledge of industrial sewing machines, sergers, patterning a plus
  • Specialty skills like tailoring, millinery, dyeing very desirable
  • Flexible/Good attitude – intern is expected to pitch in when needed on a wide variety of projects, sometimes outside the scope of their standard workload


Wednesday Workdays/Special Events

One day each week, interns from all departments come together to support general company operations. On Wednesdays, interns assist in the warehouse in costume rentals or props, or in other labor-intensive projects. Cleaning and organizing rehearsal halls or distributing marketing materials to retail stores are examples of other possible Wednesday Workday projects. In addition, interns are expected to work on large company special events such Opening Night Receptions, the annual Season Announcement, or large patron fundraisers.
